History: Animal Collages – Mixed Media

History: Animal Collages – Mixed Media

From some of my animal sketches, I created mixed media collages which I think are really fun to create.  The weimaraner collage sold at an art show for nearly $300, which was my first experience showing art in that capacity (so that was a great confidence-builder!)

For animal collages, I first sketch the animal on watercolor paper.  Then, I use old magazines to create the collage…either tearing or cutting shapes and gluing them over the sketch.  I look for interesting visuals for each piece that I tear, taking note of the colors and textures represented.

Once the collage is done, I decide what color scheme to use for a background.  I use a canvas for this and paint that in a way that will best showcase the animal collage.  Once it’s completely dry, I cut the outline of the collage from the watercolor paper and glue that to the canvas.  It adds a nice raised texture that adds interest to the piece (tough to see in pictures but more visually stimulating in person).

Once I’m happy with the artwork on canvas, I protect it with a clear varnish so that it’s ready to hang and enjoy for years to come.

Did you build this site yourself? Please reply back
as I’m planning to create my very own site and would like
to know where you got this from or what the theme is named.
